Dewsbury - Crown Flatt : Map credit National Library of Scotland In January 1876, Dewsbury Athletic and Football Club rented a field at Crown Flatt from A Fearnsides, a Savile estate tenant, for £20 per year. The club installed a wooden terrace, a perimeter wall, turnstiles, viewing platforms and a refreshment tent.

The Dewsbury United Clerks' Cricket Club had their ground next to Crown Flatt and often used the Crown Flatt ground for their athletic festival. The first of these was held on 14th July 1877 and it featured a two miles bicycle race, which was won by a local man, Sam Bates, this was the first bicycle race at Crown Flatt.

At the Dewsbury Athletic and Football Club sports on 8th June 1878, they also included a two miles bicycle handicap race for a five guinea claret jug, there were over 3,000 spectators. Both the Dewsbury A&FC and the Clerks' cricket club held their athletic festivals at the ground for a couple more years, but attendances were poor.

The first Dewsbury Bicycle Club Athletic Sports were held on 5th June 1880, Fattorini and Sons, the jeweler, provided the valuable prizes. There were ‘crack' riders from all over the North and Midlands competing but unfortunately the weather was quite wet, which kept attendance down, nevertheless the sports made a profit of £10 for the club. The open handicap races were over one, two and three miles and there was a club handicap race over one mile.

Dewsbury BC sports were held again in 1881, but the attendance was disappointing and the meeting was the last that they promoted. The Dewsbury A&FC sports resumed on 3rd September 1887 and included a two miles bicycle race, but again the meeting was not repeated.

Dewsbury A&FC abandon rugby union in favour of football and in 1898 and vacated Crown Flatt, but rugby was still played there. Dewsbury Royals Professional Baseball Club played at the ground in the summer of 1936, but disbanded after a year. The site was sold for redevelopment around 1991 and a housing estate was built there, with streets named after notable Dewsbury players.
